Julia Andersson is an architect whose work bridges architecture, art and ecological thinking. A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture, she explores how design can foster new narratives, rituals and sensory experiences rooted in regenerative futures.
Her ongoing project The Loop exemplifies this vision. Inspired by the scarcity of water in the Nevada desert, the project reimagines how humans can live with nature, not just from it. By making cycles of water and nutrients visible, The Loop honors these essential flows and immerses people within the ecosystem, cultivating a reconnection to nature and grounding ourselves in the process.
In her recent artistic research project RIFT, Julia investigates biogenic materials in the Nordic region, including straw, hemp, seaweed and mycelium. Through hands-on experiments, public installations and cross-disciplinary conversations, RIFT explores how we might shape a building culture that is ecological, sensory and deeply rooted in place.
Across her practice, Julia develops site-specific installations in collaboration with experts from diverse fields—blending architecture, art and urban planning with a distinctly humanistic approach. She works with locally available resources such as clay, straw and ocean plastics, envisioning a material culture that values repair, symbiosis and resilience over consumption and waste.
Julia’s work has been recognized internationally. She has won several competitions, including LAGI 2020 Fly Ranch with The Loop, featured in Dezeen, Forbes and the book Land Art of the 21st Century. She also won the Open Call Prototype Göteborg 2023 and served as the concept developer for the Zaatari Refugee Classroom project, which was named Building of the Year 2018 by ArchDaily.
